Correspondence 1954-1987; 1982-1987.

This series comprises records maintained by Rev. Gerald E. Currens, Executive Director of the DWME. This material is from 1977-1987 with the majority of records dating from 1982-1987. These records were generated primarily by Rev. Currens throughout the course of his tenure as DWME Executive Director, but there are several records created or retained by his predecessor the Rev. David L. Vikner. For continuity purposes, these records were kept in this series. The records that were created prior to the formation of the LCA are few in number and are samples of Christmas circular letters the United Lutheran Church in America Board of Foreign Missions sent. They were kept, for continuity purposes, with the post-1963 samples. Records in this series comprise primarily handwritten and typewritten business correspondence. General correspondence pertains to a variety of subjects, and several folders contain correspondence to and from members of the DWME Management Committee. Records that are not correspondence are, for the most part, items that were included with correspondence: agenda, exhibits, position papers, meeting minutes, and a small amount of material related to DWME staff retreats and workshops. Subject matter includes the creation of the Division for Global Mission in the ELCA; the re-entry of clergy into the United States after serving as missionaries overseas; issues linking science and technology in the United States with mission projects overseas; LCA college chaplains and how they minister to international students on their campuses; concerns regarding LCA work in Namibia and the Middle East; general business correspondence pertaining to matters related to the Management Committee; inquiries from LCA congregations, correspondence from former missionaries, and information pertaining to monetary gifts and bequests. Files are arranged alphabetically.
